Q: How do I find my state’s requirements?

A: You can begin by going to Google and typing “life insurance (your state) license requirements”. This usually provides an immediate list of schools and other educational resources. There are several options from classes to self-study guides available which allow you to choose what works best for you. Once you are comfortable, contact the testing facility in your state to schedule a test.

Q: What licenses do I need?

A: Each state has a state required test that you will be required to pass in order to obtain a life insurance license.

Q: How long does this process take?

A: The length of the process often depends on how quickly you want to receive your license. In some states, you may be required to take a course prior to the licensing exam. It’s recommended that you take the practice tests and score well before proceeding to a testing center. Every time you have to take the test, you will have to pay a fee.

Q: What is next after I pass the test?

A: Each testing center will provide scores to the state licensing bureau. Licensing fees will need to be paid and then you will need to wait for your license to be issued. The actual procedure and wait time can vary from state to state. Contact your State Department of Insurance if you have any questions.
